PC not starting up

Post by Alby on Tue Feb 10, 2015 2:35 am

Guys,
Not sure where I needed to put this...
One of the older PCs with Win7 won't start up.
It gets to the 'Welcome' then freezes. The HDD lamp is on permanently...
I've tried safe mode, with boot disc (Win7 disc). other ways to recover... to no avail...
tested RAM (1 stick at a time). Tempted to re-install windows after removing HDD and hopefully retreiving some data before wiping it...

ANy ideas...?

I'm using one of the two laptops that has wifi so I'm not desperate... but it's handy in the mancave.

Can you boot with a Linux boot CD and recover your data? I would suggest picking up SpinRite for hard drive problems, but it is kinda pricey. I would suggest the Linux boot disk and seeing if you can mount the Windows drive and try to copy your data to a USB hard drive and getting a new hard drive to reload windows on... Of course I assume you did run MemTest+ on your RAM too when you say you did a mem test.

I do suspect the hard drive though.

Hi Smile
This is most likely a "Hardware" issue.
So could've gone there.
However as long as post gets seen, it doesn't really matter.
I use a USB/SATA Hard Disk Dock*.
Use this to back anything important.
Also handy when trying to retrieve any data from problematic drives.

ALready been using a dual dock . as I had a number of HDDs given to me and some ex work ones.
No Tracy, it wasn't... tried one RAM stick at a time...
I'll give the Memtest a go.

I'm with Tracy, hard drive. Mine was doing the same, turned out to be the controller in the SSD.

Soooo.... Suggestion would be what... start from scatch?
Get another HDD and re install everything ? Not that expensive anymore...
To me that sounds like the easiest scenario...
I'll grab the data (if possible) from the old one. At least I can take my time with this...
