A Sad Day in Cricket

Post by Alby on Thu Nov 27, 2014 11:09 pm

Phil Hughes... 25 yr old
Fantastic Opening batsman...played 20-odd test matches and a few one day games for Australia....
died today after life support was turned off at Sydney Hospital.
Was playing in the state competition, batting well on 61 runs when struck on the neck by a short pitched delivery while playing a hook shot.
the ball hit and split a major artery. blood forced its way into the brain. Doctors said this type of injury would normally have killed him instantly. people performed CPR etc to keep him alive until paramedics
arrived. was put in an induced coma. we thought there was hope.... but not to be....

Our cricket coach new him personally and has taken it pretty hard.
to think a cm either way it be a bruise... just a freak accident.
The bowler was devastated... I heard Phils' sister spent nearly 2 hours with him. ... to give comfort... .

Can be hard sometimes....

Unbelievable that such a tragedy should strike the noble game of cricket. I have tried to intimidate batsmen in my younger days with short pitched deliveries but thank god (I'm an atheist really) I never caused anything serious to happen to a batsmen, but I remember having real anger when runs were just flowing from a batsman's bat. My thoughts also go out to the bowler who must be devastated. I did think that Phil Hughes was going to be a real thorn in England's side in a couple of years time as so far his achievements had not matched his immense talent, another couple of years would have seen a phenomenal batsman I am sure. It will now always be "What might have been" sad sad sad.

It made the American sports news. Too young. Very sad.
